India and Japan Strengthen Defense Ties with Focus on Joint Development of Jet and Tank Engines
May 6 2025: India is actively pursuing collaboration with Japan to co-develop advanced engines for its fighter jets and armored tanks. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani in New Delhi on Monday, May 5 2025.
The Indian Ministry of Defense highlighted the country's growing capabilities in defense manufacturing, particularly in aero-engines and tank engines. India's expertise in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services was also emphasized, noting that Indian shipyards are currently servicing U.S. warships.
Both nations agreed to deepen industrial cooperation in advanced fields such as automation and artificial intelligence. They also plan to expand collaboration into emerging domains like cybersecurity and space technology. This aligns with their shared commitment to enhancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership and contributing to regional peace.
The meeting also underscored the importance of strengthening maritime cooperation between the two countries. Earlier in the day, Minister Nakatani paid respects at the National War Memorial and received a ceremonial welcome at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantonment.
